The Hammer is an oasis with a storied past nestled in the heart of Switzerland. The Hammer forge, aka ‘Hammer’ or ‘Chupferstrecki’ was built in 1690 and is situated on the banks of the Lorze river in Cham. After many tumultuous years, the residence was purchased, and made into an estate including; park, French gardens, model farm and horse stalls by Zurich merchant and pig iron trader Johann Vogel in 1825.
Johan Vogel’s son Heinrich and later his grandson Carl would further alter the Hammer as well as establish and expand the accompanying paper factory.
After Carl Vogel’s death in 1911, his son-in-laws Neville and Bodmer would take over the paper factory, with the Naville family taking up residence in the Hammer. The Hammer villa would subsequently undergo a multi-step renovation to become a stately homestead.
Robert Nevilles’ son ‘Röbeli’ lived in the Hammer until the property was sold in 1984 due to financial constraints.
The new owners, Margrit and Andrea von Planta were fascinated by the property’s history and sought to preserve the estate’s historical spirit and style. To this end, the property underwent a seven year renovation and expansion process.
In late 2013, the Hammer became the property of Ariel Lüdi, who has sought to ensure that the estate’s traditions continue to thrive. He commissioned the modernization of the estate’s properties, especially the Hammer villa and renewed care for the estate’s gardens. Furthermore, the production of electricity from hydro-power on estate grounds has also been reinstated, as has been the case since 1894.
The Hammer Team consists of owners Ariel and Eliane Lüdi; caretakers Sandra Grab & Mario Martins; housekeeper Cristina da Costa Guerreiro.
